Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals 2023

Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals® (NPSG’s) for 2023 became effective on July 1, 2023 (TJC 2023). The 2023 NPSG’s are in the following categories:

·       Identify patients correctly

·       Improve staff communication

·       Use medicines safely

·       Use alarms safely

·       Prevent infection

·       Identify patient safety risks (prevent suicides)

·       Improve health care equity

·       Prevent mistakes in surgery

The University of Southern California Executive MHA Blog has a nice description of the 2023 NPSG’s along with background information about the NPSG’s and strategies to meet the goals (USC 2023).

Joint Commission also provides links to the NPSG’s in a simple, easy-to-read format and the chapter format.

We refer you to the USC and Joint Commission resources for descriptions of the individual NPSG’s in each category.
