AHRQ has just launched a new consumer-oriented website, www.healthcare411.org with up-to-date news and tips on quality and patient safety. Its presentations are available in print, audio and video formats and can even be downloaded to iPod’s or other multimedia devices. This is a great new site to help your patients navigate safely through the healthcare system. Congratulations to Carolyn Clancy, M.D. and all the staff at AHRQ for another great contribution to safe and effective healthcare!
This site builds upon AHRQ’s wealth of patient safety resources that may be used by patients or families. From AHRQ’s Medical Errors & Patient Safety web page you can access not only a whole host of documents on patient safety aimed at professionals but also many useful patient safety resources for patients and consumers.
Most of you are probably already familiar with AHRQ’s “20 Tips to Help Prevent Medical Errors”, a fact sheet you can give your patients and their families and friends. There is also the companion fact sheet “20 Tips to Help Prevent Medical Errors in Children”.
“Ways You Can Help Your Family Prevent Medical Errors!” provides some of the same questions with cartoon illustrations. And “How to Create a Pill Card” illustrates how one can make a personalized card that helps patients remember how and when to take their medications, with illustrations and pictures of the medications.
One of our favorites is “Be prepared for medical appointments”. This is a great tool that helps your patients develop their own list of questions to ask on medical visits. It includes sample questions to ask about prescriptions, diagnostic tests, surgery.
These tools are also nice complements to Joint Commission’s “Speak Up” program tools.
